- High storage capacity with ability to expand the storage pool without taking the array down.
- The disk management software is extremely easy to learn yet powerful
- I/O performance is great and can be even better with the 10gbe expansion card. I consistently get around 114 MB/s transfer speeds over gigabit ethernet which I know isnt the fastest speeds possible but it is sufficient for me.
- Running a single 1080p Plex stream barely ticks the cpu/ram which leads me to believe this NAS could easily run quite a few streams at one time.
Side note: I used Carbonite to keep my Drobo backed up to cloud however the only plan Carbonite has that supports NAS is their business plan which is double the price of the home plan and only supports a storage size of 250gb (vs unlimited). After a lot of frustrating research I went with Backblaze B2 to back the synology up to cloud and while its not finished, it has been working fine. In addition, B2 runs directly on the NAS so it doesnt need to be linked to a host to run.
Instead, they are well thought out, well designed, and well-executed. It can servers a windows domain controller, as a VPN server, Media server, file server, you can carve LUNs and connect to machines that are low on disk space, transfer files back and forth in high speed (thanks to its team able four network ports), etc. The wealth of its application portfolio is impressive. The network back up sever not only works flawlessly but with its de-duping technology has shrunk my backups from 1.4 TBs every night to 200 GBs by efficiently removing repeated data between back up volumes of any machine. I could be sitting here and write for a long while about Synology NAS features. Instead, I think you are best served to investigate further for yourself.
I'm only going to talk about transfer speeds which is what you may want to compare when choosing between different Synology models.
I purchased the DS1618+ to upgrade from my old and slow DS411. Anything I wanted to do with the DS411 spiked CPU usage to 99%, even simple file transfers (4 disk SHR-1 configuration), which topped at about 12MB/s.
Opening and closing apps was also terribly slow.
On the DS1618+ I used 3 older drives (16000 to 36000 hours) from the DS411 plus 2 new drives, all Western Digital RED 4TB in a 5x 4TB SHR-2 configuration and a single Volume (12000GB total usable space) for added HDD failure robustness, since I've had 2 drives fail within 1 month on the DS411 a few years back and was barely able to finish rebuilding after the first drive failed when the second one (different make and model) failed too. Plus RAID only helps you so far, only against HDD total failure, not with corruption or bitrot.
I was weary of the transfer speeds I would be able to achieve in this 5xHDD SHR-2 configuration (double parity means more CPU usage), since when I moved from my 2-bay DS211 with 2 HDD in SHR-1 to my 4-bay DS411 with 4 HDD in SHR-1, transfer speeds dropped from about 36MB/s to about 12MB/s due to the higher CPU usage. Lately this has been a pain since now I'm processing large amounts of drone images stored on my NAS.
But I was blown away: Transfer speeds are as fast as Gigabit ethernet allows you to. I never thought I would see 99% usage of my GbE PC connection. Both writing and reading from the NAS to my Windows 7 x64 PC SSD is about 100MB/s which I tested with a single 16.6GB movie file.
Since I had one drive slot left (Disk 6), I used it to put an older 64TB SSD I had laying around and enabled it as SSD cache. No need to buy the expansion card. However when using only one SATA SSD, cache is limited to read operations. But as you can see from the attached image, the sustained writing speed of 110MB/s was entirely done on the 4TB HDD. CPU usage stayed fixed at 30% during the entire transfer. (The difference between individual disk write speed is just because it shows the instant write speed, not the mean write speed which usually was the same between Disks 1 to 5).
Now I'm considering adding a second GbE port to my PC, since this NAS has 4 GbE port which support link aggregation.
I'm extremely pleased with this purchase. Plus it has INTERNAL power transformer, so there is no extra bulky external brick whose power cable comes out easily when reaching behind the NAS as the older models I have.

PROS:
* It just works, seriously, pop in some drives, follow the web-based setup, and you're up and running.
* Synology Hybrid Raid makes things really flexible, you can mix and match drives and it will give you the most storage possible.
* Lots of applications that can be used on it, including Docker, which is super powerful, I even run a GUI-based linux using Docker so I can run an old legacy app I wrote.
CONS:
* CPU is fine for normal NAS tasks and basic file extractions and such, however, the unit is supposed to be capable of running 'multiple virtual machines', but it's so slow it's almost impossible to run even a single VM on the CPU. Luckily I'm not super reliant on this feature.
* Fans are smaller, and therefore louder than my old 1813+. Not that they are super loud, but when you're within 2 metres of the unit, they are definitely audible.
In short, yes, I'd recommend this product, just make sure you run it through a high-end surge protector if you decide to get one, the power supplies are quite sensitive to surges and it's a pain getting a replacement power supply.
