Excellent controller with outstanding software, just wish the thumbstick felt better
    5 Stars
Excellent controller with outstanding software, just wish the thumbstick felt better
I've tried one other gameboard (Belkin n52te), and thought that it was great. The one thing I didn't like about it was the digital thumbstick and the fact that it didn't depress to act as a button. Enter the Logitech G13. This thing pretty much saved the day, once I got my hand(s) on it.To start off with, it's a lot bigger than the n53te, so make sure you have enough room for it. With my mouse, keyboard, and the G13 all taking up space on the slide-out keyboard shelf of my computer desk, I find that the G13 and keyboard have to fight for their turn to have focus. There's simply not enough room to have them all laid out next to one another. The nice thing about this, though, is that other than typing out text, the G13 replaces every single keystroke I'd ever use on the keyboard for controlling games.Speaking of games, I am an avid MMORPG junkie. I play Warhammer Online (my MMORPG de jour for now) every chance I get and for many hours at a time. That's what lead me on my journey to find a better way of rapidly executing the various abilities my characters have. A simple game controller wouldn't suffice, since there are simply way too many abilities that need to be mapped to buttons. I found out about these gamepads almost a year ago and bought the n52te after a little research. After reading a thread in a forum that discussed the G13, it sounded like it had all the features I felt were missing from the n52te, so I bought it.The packaging it arrived in was secure, so nobody should have to worry about damage during transit. As I unboxed it the reality of how monstrous this thing is really hit home. It was huge, and I was unsure whether it would fit on my slide-out tray with the keyboard & mouse. I was able to squeeze it in after pushing the keyboard back a bit (keyboard is a Saitek Gamer's keyboard, mouse is a Razer Death Adder.) As usual I didn't bother installing the software from the box, and went to the website instead. Finding a driver was a snap, and I downloaded and installed the latest drivers. There are, oddly enough, two separate programs that run in the tray for the G13. One is the LCD screen management app, and the other is the gameboard programming app. I'm not quite sure why these couldn't be integrated with one another. I'll get into the programming app later in the review.Hand placement felt good. The buttons are nice and large, and their surface is concave, allowing the user to feel where their fingers are at without any danger of them sliding off and losing track of which keys they're on. It sounds silly, but after you have a gameboard with flat buttons you'll really appreciate this. The gameboard keys are also laid out on a surface that curves in towards the center, allowing for more comfortable operation as opposed to a flat surface which forces the user to rotate their fingers in ways they really aren't meant to. The only drawback is there is no way to adjust for larger or smaller hands. One size fits all. The n52te was somewhat adjustable.Keys? Wow are there a lot of them! There's so many that unfortunately my fingers can't stretch far enough to hit them all comfortably. However, I don't think of this as a problem. I would MUCH rather have too many keys than too little. I still use the fringe keys infrequently for character abilities that don't need to be accessed very often. Also, the only keys that are really able to be accessed rapidly without having to curl your fingers up are the top two rows. I occasionally press one of the third row buttons, but it's rare. Maybe I just need to adapt more? Only time will tell I suppose. The analog thumbstick is both a blessing and a curse, and really the only thing I have a problem with. I say it's a blessing because a digital thumbstick (like the one on the n52te) is just horrible. I found myself stuck in limbo frequently with the n52te because I was moving the thumbstick from the North to West position, and the thumbstick would stop sending a signal as I moved it between these states. Also, one of the big things I wished for on the n52te was that the thumbstick act as a button if you push down on it. This was all solved with the G13. The thumbstick is analog, allowing for a full range of motion without that "clicky" feel as you maneuver it. The thumbstick also acts as an additional button when you depress it. The curse is that the thumbstick itself feels awful. The hat on it is way too small, leaving the user to feel like they're trying to use the eraser end of a pencil to move around. It's a real shame too, because everything else about this gameboard is absolutely terrific. The gameboard lighting is also really cool. There are 3 modes that can be cycled through, so all of the keys you see are effectively TRIPLED. Yeah. This thing is *insane* with the coverage it has when it comes to duplicating everything you can assign to a standard keyboard. Anyway, each mode has its own color of light, and the color can be selected using the gameboard editor. There are a lot of different colors to choose from also, so you're not pigeon-holed into only a handful of choices. The LCD screen is a very nice touch. It can report all sorts of in-game statistics, and can be set to receive RSS feeds from the news, display computer info such as CPU load, the time & date, and all sorts of other statistics. The LCD screen can apparently be programmed by anyone, so you can write your own custom G13 LCD screen plug-in to display literally anything you want. Unfortunately as of this writing Warhammer Online only displays its icon, and I've seen it sometimes display a message stating that I'm not queued for any scenarios (you have to play Warhammer Online to know what I'm talking about here.)The gameboard programming software is simple and easy to use. Making macros is a breeze. One of the other big gripes I had about the n52te was with programming simple keyboard combinations. You want to assign a button on the gameboard to Ctrl+1? Sorry, the n52te software will only recognize the first button you press, so you only get Ctrl. To assign combinations you have to create a macro. Ugh! Not with the G13. It easily recognizes Ctrl/Alt/Shift modifiers, and even goes so far as to recognize *which* one you've pressed, whether it's right or left. Making a macro is nice and easy too, and you can copy & paste them between different modes to set up the device fairly rapidly. So to sum up...Pros:- LCD screen is fantastic and provides a great means to display information- TONS of keys that are tripled via mode switching- Concave keys and surface which creates a comfortable surface for the hand- Analog thumbstick as opposed to digital- Many lighting color schemes to choose from- Easy to use programming softwareCons:- It's HUGE- The analog thumbstick's surface is too small- Not adjustable to accommodate small or large hands- Since there are so many keys, some are simply impractical for frequent use since they're so far apartThe pros so overwhelmingly make up for the trivial cons that I cannot emphasize enough how great this gameboard is. It's just one of those things you must try to truly appreciate. I will also give a disclaimer that there is *always* a learning curve when it comes to these devices. If you have never used a gameboard before, you will find yourself lost until your hand can seek out the buttons and operate the thumbstick without having to think about it. Once it becomes natural for you to use it, that's when the lightbulb will come on over your head and you'll wonder how you ever played games without one.

I will say right off: This is the best of at least 3 auxiliary keyboard/gamepads that I have owned. I love it, but it is not perfect. Before I begin my review, let me describe my play style as it may give my comments more relevance. I am a long-time COMPUTER gamer. (I remember and played on virtually every machine since the Atari 800, and all of the Intel/DOS/Windows based machines. I tend more towards rpg/mmo games as opposed to fps or simulations. I also have a "mouse dominant" as opposed to a "keyboard dominant" play style. This means that I prefer to mouse-click on the gui to activate actions, as opposed to keyboard activation. That being said, I have long sought a way to put those keyboard commands I DO use, under my left hand with no need to shift my hand around the keyboard.

The Good: The G13 is a fully programmable auxiliary keypad. If you want a way to put almost all of your keyboard commands under one hand, this is it. It has 22 keys on the main pad, and 2 more and a mini-joystick for thumb control. All of the keys can be set to be individual or macro keystrokes. And profiles can be created for each game you play and set to be activated by the game's start-up file or shortcut. This makes it both extremely flexible and useful. The rest for the heel of the hand is non-slip padded enough to be comfortable. All of the main-pad keys are through-lit and thus easily seen in a darkened play areas. And the G4, and G10-G12 keys, normally set to WASD have a slight extra dishing to make them locate-able by feel. The spacing and stroke length is identical to the throw on my primary keyboard (a Logitech G15). Though the keys are aligned vertically rather than staggered as on a full keyboard. This may be annoying to those who prefer the newer chick-let style keyboards.

The not sot Good: The reach is longer than I would like. I found that until I moved the heel of my hand up a bit on the rest, that a long game session produced a fair amount of fatigue. Moving my hand up on the rest gave my fingers more arch, and really reduced the fatigue. Unfortunately that moved my thumb out of position for the buttons on the thumb-pad. This has not been a major problem for me, as I have mapped a thumb button on my mouse to Spacebar. But could be a real problem if you can't do this. I also find myself wishing the key stroke-length was a bit shorter. If I could do a redesign on the G13 I would make the keys just slightly smaller to improve reach, reduce the stroke depth just a bit, and do something to allow the thumbpad to be moved along the edge of the pad to make it fit the individual user's hand position.

The LED screen is a nice feature but of limited use in active gameplay, as I don't have time to look at it. It does give some interesting information if I have time (or remember) to look at it while I play. All in all, as I said at the outset, I love my G13. It is the first gamepad I don't have to consciously remind myself to use. And I find that I don't have to put my hands on my keyboard except to type messages. And can replace my hand back on the pad, in the correct position, almost as easily as I do my right hand on my mouse. Can I say any more? 4 of 5 stars.

UPDATE, After more than 4 years of daily use: I LOVE this pad! It is still as functional as the day I unboxed it. If it were to die tomorrow, I would simply order another. It is one of the best gaming purchases I have made. I have made a few adjustments in the way I use it. And those have made all the difference.
    1) I always use my own custom set-up for each game. I have developed a "standard" layout for my games. i.e :
    a) I dropped the movement keys (usually WASD or arrows) down one row, for easier reach, and to make the top row available for number or function keystrokes.
    b) I program the keys for things like inventory, map, character stats, etc. in the same locations regardless of the actual game's key assignments. This let's me just play the games, rather than learn specific layouts.
    c) I don't try to use the "Thumb-stick" to control movement. Instead, I assign the direction positions to keystrokes or macros. (Usually both Right and Down, and Up and Left, to the same action.) This lets me do things like "Throw the Hutt-ball" in SWtoR, or make a special attacks in other games, by just flicking my thumb.
    2) I took an old corrugated paper box and some duct tape, and made an angled rest for my G13 to give it MY perfect play angle. I wrap this stand in a micro-fiber towel for additional comfort for my forearm. I can play for hours without fatigue. Yes, I am a true Geek, and as I am now retired, I have the time.
    3) I don't worry about the automatic game select function. Most of my games run through Steam, and getting them to auto-select is more bother than just using the LED Screen to scroll through to lock onto the game I am going to play. The USB trickle-charge keeps the game selected after my computer is shut down.

For the above reasons, I have changed my rating from 4 to 5 stars.

I never thought I'd still be using a peripheral from 17 years ago, but I've yet to find a replacement.

I initially discovered dedicated game boards around 2003 while playing Everquest. Needed something more programmable as playing a Ranger without one made raiding in the pre-voice era challenging. Started with a Nostromo and discovered controlling movement with my thumb much easier that the classic WASD set-up. When Logitech released their own gaming board, I traded up as the increase in buttons was helpful.

It's now 17 years later and I still use this daily, and heavily. The thumbstick once programmed makes movements infinitely easier and more intuitive than the WASD configuration. Thumbsticks have been used on game controllers for decades for a reason. I did swap out using a wider thumb stick from a similar era Logitech gamepad and it fit perfectly and put less wear on my thumb.

The keys are still programmable using Logitech gaming software, though you need the older version, not the newer Logitech G control panel. Key response is very good for being membrane and have a nice tactile feel. The software allows each key to be fully programmed, including delay, up/down trigger, key, macros, etc... It does take a little time to set up each new game but I've learned to map similar controls (run, crouch, main attack, etc...) to the same key in each game, which makes switching from one game to another very easy.

Durability has been great. My first lasted for 10 years of almost daily MMORPG and FPS usage before one of the thumb buttons died. I picked up a replacement and shortly after saw they were discontinued. I picked up two more on the cheap when they were being clearanced before the price sky-rocketed.

I've since added macros for every program I use - photoshop, DxO, excel, etc... This has dramatically sped up workflow and allows me to have one click function without needing to change main keyboard controls. I've honestly fearful when eventually the gaming software is no longer compatible with windows. I'm hoping Logitech sees their error and brings this back.

I've tried Razer, Belkin, Ifyoo, etc - the Logitech is still superior. Either the other options don't have enough keys, or they don't have a thumbstick. The razer is the closest option but the four equal key rows doesn't work as ergonomically as the 7-7-5-3 configuration of the Logitech - it's easier to reach/extend your fingers than tuck them under to hit lower keys. There's a reason the Logitech still sells for $150 used and $250+ new. If you can snag one, learn to use it, your gaming will improve significantly. Also contact Logitech and ask them to consider releasing an update.

    Edit 4/25/23:
Still going strong, still standing up to daily wear. The rest is complete worn smooth but the keys still work perfectly. I see a number of youtubers now modding other gaming keyboards to add a thumbstick to them. One company is even selling a dedicated thumbstick you can use with a standard keyboard. Logitech, it's time to bring this back!!! Demand is there!!! Still the best gaming peripheral I've ever purchased.

Very Good product. I use this for short cut off my Desk Top applications. in beginning it is a little hard because it is some of different keys place. but When you use this continue it help you tow work fast.
I am using wacom cintiq 22.2 touch its 8 short cut in left and 8 in right in right hand you have pen so one sides keys very difficult to use in wacom.
Now I have lot of keys for my work in left hand and take a small space from key board. Logitech can add 3 more keys at left side but it is good.
    Thanks Amazon and Logitech.

Honestly, gaming without one is rubbish now. The buttons are sturdy and responsive, the shape is perfect and fits to my hand and no button is out of reach. I personally use the thumb stick for hot keys in game more than not, but it works well as a stick for movement as well. If you are really serious you can use the WSAD layout, (using the G4, G10, G11, G12 buttons), thumb-stick and mouse you can naturally control all directions of movement in a way that requires no strain and extreme accuracy that can only be surpassed by a high end flight stick set-up.
